Shanghai Bookstore Packaging Gift Bag Display
Although online book purchasing is convenient, many people still prefer to buy books from bookstores. In addition to the tactile experience of touching the pages, the bookstore's unique custom "packaging bags" are also a reason why readers are drawn to physical bookstores. On January 26th, the Shanghai Book and Periodical Distribution Industry Association hosted the "Shanghai Bookstore Packaging Gift Bag Display." A variety of packaging bags added more fun and a sense of warmth to physical bookstores.
Walking into the bookstore, in the display area, rows of canvas bags, Tyvek bags, kraft paper bags, and other eco-friendly packaging were presented to readers. A total of over 80 new types of bags were showcased, including paper bags, cloth bags, cups, and book bands used for book sales, cultural and creative products, and coffee and light meals.
The convenient and practical canvas bag is a "daily-use bag" for many readers. Among the exhibited works, the most were fabric packaging items, with 46 pieces in total, divided into bags, non-woven bags, shopping bags, and tote bags. The materials mainly included cotton canvas, polyester-cotton canvas, non-woven fabric, and felt. The advantages of fabric packaging items lie in their durability, unique and innovative design patterns, and eco-friendly materials, making them the mainstream bags favored by many young literati on the streets today.
There were 27 paper packaging items on display, using paper types such as cardstock, kraft paper, and Tyvek. Tyvek has become the "new favorite" material for the book industry's packaging. Combining the characteristics of paper, film, and fabric, Tyvek has a smooth and rigid surface, with good printability and a unique texture and feel. It is also waterproof, breathable, strong, and tear-resistant, meeting the needs of book sales and portability. Moreover, this material is environmentally friendly and recyclable.
There were 8 food and beverage category exhibits, divided into paper cups, cup sleeves, and packaging boxes. The main materials used were food-grade laminated paper, corrugated paper, offset paper, and cardstock. On that day, through on-site observation, industry professionals evaluated the items based on material, color, size, capacity, handle length, and width, among other factors. They assessed the items from perspectives such as environmental friendliness, practicality, durability, simplicity, elegance, and sophistication. A total of 30 items were selected across the paper, fabric, and food and beverage categories. Among them, the "Jiangnan Bookstore" paper bag submitted by Xinhua Chain won first place in the paper category; the "Let It Go" tote bag submitted by Xinrong Culture won first place in the fabric category; and the "Cultural Series" cup sleeve submitted by Xinhua Chain won first place in the food and beverage category.

The paper bags, fabric bags, and paper cups showcased this time are new products designed and used by the Shanghai book distribution industry after more than a year of effort. They all feature environmental friendliness, simplicity, durability, and elegance. Since their introduction in 2023, they have been recognized by readers. They not only increased the visibility of bookstores and promoted reading but also aligned with the trend of green, low-carbon, and sustainable consumption. These items have become reusable, stylish accessories that can be carried outside to showcase one's literary taste and encourage a reading lifestyle, according to a person in charge of the Shanghai Book and Periodical Distribution Industry Association. At the end of 2020, Shanghai banned the use of disposable plastic shopping bags in bookstores across the city and promoted the use of eco-friendly fabric bags and other reusable shopping bags.
